I realized today just how much my work ethic differs from our new Assistant Manager's. Damn, that's frustrating.
I worked nearly 7 hours straight without a break for a drink of water or to use the bathroom. I had amazing customers all day long almost without exception. I hussled my tail off, never faltering in the customer service I provide and of which I am so proud, and I practically had to coax my AM onto the floor to interact with people in a positive manner and act as my equal in serving customers. She was polite and did what she needed to do, but I don't think she ever cracked a smile or looked someone straight in the face all day long. She sighed a lot, sniffled a lot and talked under her breath a lot. grrrr
All 7 hours... Just the two of us... open to close.
At the end of the day I still had two people making decisions and finishing up as I started to straighten things up. Even then they had my attention and I was 'with them'. One made her decisions and was so appreciative of my help that she gushed thanks as she left. The other was pokey and terribly without focus, but a frequent shopper I've seen many times. She will return ~ and she'll remember who took care of her and HOW WELL. It took her a long time to wrap things up but in the end she spent a decent amount of money and, more importantly, was delighted with what she got and the assistance she received.
I'm sorry - I just think that THAT is much more important than pushing customers to get out on time!!!
It may be an hourly, retail, run o' the mill job, but it's my job and I want to do it well. Ok, maybe exceptionally well. So sue me! :-P
